The idea that aesthetics can be both a filter and a wise guide. When I was younger (as a typical engineering type) I was a pretty hard-headed rationalist and I dismissed aesthetic considerations as "the icing on the cake" at best. At 47, I've come to now appreciate aesthetic judgement within a domain you're familiar with to actually be a form of route-1 problem solving. The caveat here being that when you're outside your domain of expertise it's hard to distinguish useful aesthetic judgement from just following the fashion.

What do you do?
I figure out how to make computers control things (like motors) in the physical world, in a way that ensures nobody gets hurt or dies.
Why?
1. People pay me. 2. I'd do this stuff for free; there's a magic in seeing the results of your efforts in concrete reality.
