Independence is something we should all aspire to. Wars have been fought for it, and even in everyday life it takes many forms. You can live with your parents in your 30s while launching your own business. You can be in a relationship and share special moments with someone while still keeping your personal space to cultivate passions and hobbies. Dependence should always be a transitory stage, not a destination. The word "dependence" comes from the Latin verb dēpendēre, meaning "to hang from," and that image is worth keeping in mind. Relying on others for the most important areas of your life exposes you to real risks. Having a single employer as your only source of income puts someone else in control of your finances. Having an emotional dependence on a person can cause you tremendous pain if they decide to walk away. In nature, animals start by depending on their parents for food, protection and warmth, and once they're ready, they leave and live on their own. The same logic applies to us. Get a job, save money, learn skills, and use that time to prepare for the leap. When the risk of staying put becomes scarier than the unknown ahead, it's time to jump.
