I got sucked too deep into digital distractions and enjoyed myself immensely. Now I am having more fun using technology intentionally. I love Star Trek and think technology could be great if we had that sort of relationship with it, keeping the computer in the role of tool.

Location:

Worcester, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

Professional title:

Multilingual Learner Coordinator, Japanese language enthusiast, tinkerer

What do you do?

I teach and oversee the ESL/ELL/MLL program at my school. In my free time I read, study languages and go shopping in small town downtowns.

Why?

I teach because every job I have ever had since age 20 has been teaching, the gravity is strong and I am well-suited for the environment. Teaching students from different language backgrounds stimulates my curiosity and helps me to bite off more language study in my free time. My focus outside of Japanese is Brazilian Portuguese at the moment.

What should we read?

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel (Discovered during the COVID years) A Thief of Time by Tony Hillerman (A nostalgic pick from my youth and memories of the Southwest) Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes (A classic, both beautiful and sad) The Backyard Adventurer by Beau Miles (His oddball philosophy will blow your mind) Chapterhouse: Dune by Brian Herbert (Heavy and esoteric, a fitting end for Dune) A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle (A book that I find again every few years and always read a bit differently)
